Niger: Threat To Prosecute President Bazoum Unwarranted- US Govt

The United State Secretary of State, Anthony Bliken has spoken to the ousted Niger Republic President, Mohamed Bazoum, who is being detained.

The Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, Matthew Miller, made this known in a statement on Wednesday.

Miller said Blinken spoke on the phone with Bazoum on Wednesday regarding the situation in Niger Republic, adding that the Secretary shared his deep concern over his detention.

He said Bliken reiterated that the United States remains committed to the restoration of Niger’s democratically-elected government and Bazoum and his family’s safety is paramount.

Recall that Nigerien the military government led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani forcefully ousted the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum last week.

Niger Military Gov’t Reopens Borders To Five Countries, Exclude ECOWAS Members

The new junta government in the Republic of Niger has reopened the country’s land borders and airspace to five neighbouring African countries.

The military junta said the borders were opened only to Mali, Burkina Faso, Algeria, Libya, and Chad.

Naija News reports that tensions between Niger and other ECOWAS members remain as the country’s borders with Benin and Nigeria remain closed.
