Super Eagles: Defender Mutes Critics With First Goal

Nigerian defender, Calvin Bassey, will move from Ajax to Premier League club Fulham in the Premier League this summer.

The two clubs have reached an agreement that will see the Premier League club pay the Dutch club a transfer fee worth €21 million.

Before Ajax accepted this deal, the Dutch giants had rejected the Cottagers’ first bid for Calvin Bassey which is worth £15 million.

At this point, Fulham and Bassey will now discuss personal terms before he will travel to England for medicals and then sign a deal that comes with a sell-on fee.

Since June this summer, Brighton and Fulham have been after the signature of Bassey who still has four years in his current deal with Ajax. All things being equal, the Nigerian defender would be a Fulham player in the coming days.

Before he joined Ajax last summer, Bassey played 65 times for Rangers during two seasons, during which he helped the team win the Scottish Cup and the league championship in 2021.

He has made 39 appearances since joining the Dutch team, with one goal and five assists.

Amid speculations about his exit from Ajax, the coach of the club, Maurice Steijn told Dutch daily, Telegraaf, that he has informed “Calvin Bassey it would be better to leave Ajax”.

The coach added, “Also because of the money. When he leaves — we can strengthen the squad properly. I have told him this honestly.”
