Tackle Hunger, Insecurity Before It's Too Late - Shariah Council Tells Tinubu

The cost of fuel has soared from N197 to N617 per litre in less than two months, despite the assurances from President Bola Tinubu during his inaugural address in May 2023 that fuel subsidy removal would not result in excessive price hikes.

At his inauguration, Tinubu announced the end of the subsidy program, immediately causing the pump price to rise to N537 per litre.

This Tuesday, the price of fuel further escalated to N617.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) explained this drastic change as the result of “market forces”.

However, Nigerians are facing hardships due to the sharp increase and are voicing their discontent.

Adding to the public outrage, a video of Tinubu’s campaign has started to circulate online, where he pledged to cut fuel prices if elected.

The video, sourced from a popular microblogging platform, is from a campaign rally held in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, on January 25, 2023.

In the video, Tinubu, speaking in Yoruba, assured the audience that despite predictions that petrol prices could reach N200, they would be reviewed downwards under his administration.

However, with the current situation, it seems those promises have not been fulfilled.
