Jose Peseiro Is Still In Charge Of Super Eagles Without Contract – NFF

The contract of Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, expired in June 2023 but the Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that the Portuguese tactician is still in charge of the club.

The NFF is said to be bankrupt and is being choked by the cost of Peseiro’s $70,000 monthly salary. Hence the football body is seriously considering the future of the coach despite his repeated declarations that he wants to win the Nations Cup with Nigeria.

Amid mixed performances, Jose Peseiro has been able to qualify the Super Eagles for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations which will commence in Ivory Coast from January. But that might not help him to remain the country’s head coach if he fails to accept a pay cut.

If Peseiro finally walked away from the team, multiple sources claimed that the NFF will look for local alternatives, with Emmanuel Amunike, Sunday Oliseh, and current assistant coach George Finidi being the front-runners.

However, after the first FIFA Instructor’s Course held in Abuja, Nigeria on Saturday, the NFF’s Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen, told reporters that Jose Peseiro would remain the head coach of the Super Eagles until an agreement for a new contract is reached.

According to the former Super Eagles coach, both the Portuguese tactician and the NFF are still negotiating over a new contract and noted that if the two parties fail to reach an agreement, then the coach would have to go.

He said, “At the moment he is in charge, we are discussing in-house and we are giving him conditions as well.

“We are flexible, so it could be suitable for both sides, and once we reach a common ground, why not?

“We would invite him and once we agree and we arrive at a common ground, we would be flexible and we also want him to be flexible with us.”

He added, “Contract or no contract, he is a human being and he is still the coach of the national team as it is.

“Contract attached to whatever is not the issue for now, we will invite him as our present coach. We want to reach a common ground but if we can’t, we would also like to shake hands.”
