The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has been told to prosecute the Kogi Local Government Chairman, Joseph Omuya Salami, who was caught on camera destroying electoral materials and intimidating INEC officers during the February 25, 2023 election.

Naija News reports that the Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday asked the electoral umpire to prosecute Salami for his alleged offence

It was gathered that the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) , CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, gave the commission the go ahead to prosecute the case, saying that the policemen identified in the incident had been dealt with.

Adejobi promised that the force would compile the cases involving policemen to share with the public even though many Nigerians would not believe them, the force would keep being transparent.

He said “This Kogi case is one of the cases that will be prosecuted by INEC, while the policemen in charge have been dealt with. I will compile all the cases involving policemen and share. It would be recalled that a video of Salami filmed while destroying votes allegedly belonging to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senatorial Candidate for Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan.

This platform reported in March that  Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan tendered evidence to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba concerning election malpractices.

It was gathered that the PDP chieftain in a letter to the IGP requested that he looks into the matter concerning a case of alleged electoral malpractice by the Chairman of Adavi Local Government Area in Kogi State, Joseph Omuya Salami.

Akpoti-Uduaghan in a letter by her dated March 6, 2023, to the IGP by her lawyer, Samuel Ogala, demanded an investigation into allegations of electoral offences including the offence of destruction of election materials, obstruction of election, intimidation and harassment of INEC officials and voters on election day by Salami.

The PDP chieftain, who enveloped video evidence to back her claim noted that Salami’s alleged act constitute very grave offences under the Electoral Act, 2022.
