Former South African president and leader of the Commonwealth Observation Mission in Nigeria, Dr. Thabo Mbeki, has pleaded with Bola Tinubu, the incoming president of Nigeria, to keep the African continent in mind when he assumes office.

Mbeki visited Tinubu on Thursday and spoke with him about the conclusion of the Commonwealth Observation Mission, according to a statement released by Tinubu’s media aide Tunde Rahman on Friday.

Mbeki told Tinubu that the election was fair and credible while urging him to utilize the entire African continent as his compass once he gets government.

Mbeki was quoted as saying, “Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with a big economy. Whatever happens here sets the pace for the rest of Africa.

“We need a strong Nigerian presidency that will also focus on the African region.

“Your opponent will be looking for the smallest thing to throw stones at. That is the way of democracy.”

In his response, the Nigeria’s president-elect assured the former president of South Africa of his commitment to promoting the continent’s political and economic union.

Additionally, he committed to collaborating with Mbeki and other African leaders to protect the continent’s resources.

He urged the former South Africa president not to be far from him when he assumes office as Nigeria’s president.
