Naija News looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Monday 2nd January 2023.

The PUNCH: Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday endorsed the Labour Party standard bearer, Peter Obi, saying he had an edge over other presidential candidates in terms of knowledge, discipline, vitality and character. The elder statesman, therefore, called on Nigerians to vote for the LP standard bearer in the February 25 presidential polls

The Guardian: Worthless! This was how All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council (APC PCC) described yesterday’s endorsement of Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The former leader, who over the years has become renown for his ‘letter interventions’ at the eve of general elections, reached for the controversial pen once more, yesterday, scribbling an endorsement of Obi.

This Day: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), yesterday, reacted to the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu’s denial of a meeting in London with the five aggrieved PDP governors, referred to as G-5, describing it a barefaced lie. PDP PCC, also yesterday, called on Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, to publicly apologise to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and the family of the late Chief Anthony Anenih for saying Anenih asked Obasanjo to kneel before Atiku when they were in office.

The Nation: Former President Olusegun Obasanjo came under fire last night for stucking his neck for Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi in next month’s election. The two leading political parties – the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – knocked the former President. One-time External Affairs Minister Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi and a former member of the House of Representatives, Dr. Usman Bugaje, expressed displeasure at the position of the ex-president, which he made known through an open letter released yesterday.

Daily Trust: Dark clouds are hovering over the chances of the leading opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) reclaiming power at the February 25, 2023, presidential poll. While other political parties and their candidates have intensified their campaigns aimed at ‘grabbing” power, PDP is campaigning in the midst of an intense crisis threatening to tear it into shreds.
