In a move he never imagined he would make, Jesse Lingard will leave the field on Tuesday night at Old Trafford as an opponent of his boyhood club.

Before a summer move to the City Ground, the only permanent club of Jesse Lingard was Manchester United. Currently, he hopes to help an improving Nottingham Forest team defeat United.

This game cannot be like any other for the Englishman, despite the winger’s attempts to play down the importance of his return to Old Trafford tonight.

When the attacker scored his first goal for United in 2015, he said it was like “a dream come true” because he had joined the team when he was just seven years old.

With 232 outings under his belt, 35 goals, and 32 England caps, he was quite the player. However, only four starts in his final season at United did not represent his previous seasons.

Recall that before his final season at Old Trafford, Lingard had a successful loan spell at West Ham, and upon his return, he had anticipated seeing regular action. However, first Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then Ralf Rangnick left Lingard on the bench.

Ahead of Nottingham Forest’s visit to Old Trafford later tonight, at 21:00, Jesse Lingard admitted that he has “no idea” why he didn’t play regularly under the two coaches at United.

He added: ‘I don’t know what the problem was, whether it was politics or whatever. I still haven’t got an answer. I’d rather that someone had told me, “This is why you’re not playing”, out of respect for my being there so long, but I never got that.

‘It was false promises. I was training hard and I was sharp, I was ready.

‘So this is a chance to say my goodbyes because I never really got that. It will be an enjoyable occasion but we want to win the game. You can’t get caught up too much in it emotionally.’

Currently at his new club, Nottingham Forest, Jesse Lingard is gaining confidence. Just before the World Cup, in the 2-0 Carabao Cup victory over Tottenham, he scored his first goal for the team. To set up a match with Wolves in the round of 16, he added another at Blackburn this week.

After assisting England in reaching the 2018 World Cup semifinals, the 30-year-old signed a one-year contract with Forest and hoped to compete in a second World Cup.

However, due to an Achilles issue in the first few weeks of the season, he failed to actualize his dream of playing at the just concluded 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
