Naija News looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Saturday 17th December 2022.

The PUNCH: Twenty-four hours after the Central Bank of Nigeria directed deposit money banks to start giving the redesigned naira notes to customers, partygoers, high net worth customers and currency traffickers are mopping up the new notes from the banks even as the notes are being rationed to the majority of customers.

The Guardian: Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, yesterday, warned that the 2023 general election might be jeopardised if the spate of attacks on its facilities across the country is not checked. Yakubu raised the alarm while speaking at a public hearing by the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee investigating attacks on INEC offices and facilities across the country.

This Day: President Muhammadu Buhari is 80 years old today, and prominent Nigerians, including former president Goodluck Jonathan, former vice president Atiku Abubakar, All Progressives Congress’ Presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu and President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, are saluting the President and extolling his leadership qualities.

The Nation: Tale after tale of confusion, scarcity and even rejection now surrounds the issuance of the new naira notes by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Reports from across the country yesterday showed that some Nigerians were cold in embracing the new notes with some traders and transporters refusing to accept them.

Saturday Sun: The perceived solidarity among the G-5 governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), might be put to test soon, as recent overtures made by the camp of the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar to reach out to aggrieved parties might have started yielding fruits. This is even as the Vice Presidential candidate of the PDP and governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, has been mandated to lead the fresh reconciliation moves.
