The West Asian country, Saudi Arabia stunned Argentina in a 2-1 defeat in their World Cup opening in Qatar.

In a thrilling Group C opening in Lusail, a brave and talented Saudi Arabia shocked the Lionel Messi-led side by coming from behind to defeat the two-time World Cup champions.

Saudi Arabia, who is ranked 51st in the world, may have lost hope when Lionel Messi scored the game’s opening goal from the spot but their efforts paid off eventually.

However, the Argentine side faced a disappointing atmosphere during the game when they had three of their goals disallowed for offside by the VAR.

Meanwhile, in a dramatic 10-minute stretch after the break, Saudi Arabia turned the game around, with Saleh Al-Shehri pulling one back and Salem Al Dawsari giving them the lead to cause chaos in the fans.

The Green Falcons showed their toughness by fending off an outstanding Argentina front line to record only their fourth World Cup victory in history and open up the group with three points.

Lionel Scaloni’s men entered the competition as one of the favourites after going 36 games without losing, which includes winning the 2021 Copa America.

They now have to do all they can to maintain their chances of achieving their first major victory since 1986 and give Messi a deserving cap to what will probably be his last World Cup.
