The Aare Onakakanfo in-council has commended the decision of the Zamfara State government authorizing residents to take up arms against bandits in the state.

Naija News earlier reported that the commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Magaji Dosara, in a statement on behalf of the government on Sunday asked the Commissioner of Police to issue a gun license to those eligible for it.

Ibrahim said that the government has resolved to take further measures to deal with the recent escalating attacks, kidnapping, and criminal levies enforced on innocent communities.

The government said it had directed individuals to prepare and obtain guns to defend themselves against the bandits, adding that the state commissioner of police has been directed to issue licenses to all those who qualify and are willing to obtain such guns to defend themselves.

Reacting to the development, the Gbonke Aare- Onakakanfo, Gboyega Adejumo in a statement on Monday issued on behalf of the council urged South west governors to take a cue from the Zamfara state government.

The council further stressed that South-west governors should stop tolerating the activities of terrorists ”masquerading as bandits and kidnappers, and killing innocent people at will”

They also noted that Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle through his directive opened the eyes of other governors across the country.

The statement reads, ‘‘Taking up arms in self defence is a global practice that should be encouraged once it is backed by the law.

“There is nothing bad if citizen takes up arms to defend themselves”

The council further urged South-west governors to ensure that the southwest security stakeholder group and the western Nigerian security Network close ties to further secure the region.
