The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced new dates for the conduct of the 2023 general elections in Nigeria.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu who announced the change during a press conference in Abuja on Saturday said the new dates became necessary as a result of the 2022 amended electoral act recently signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Naija News reports according to what the INEC Chairman said that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on Saturday, February 25, 2023, instead of the earlier announced February 18 date.

Also, the governorship and state houses of assembly elections will hold on March 11, 2023.

The INEC boss also announced that between Monday 4th April 2022 to Friday 3rd June 2022, political parties are to conduct primary elections and resolve all disputes arising from them.

The submission of nomination forms by parties for presidential and national assembly candidates are to be done between 10th June and 17th June 2022 while that of governorship and state assembly candidates are to be done between 1st July and 15th July 2022.

The electoral umpire also announced that the commencement of campaign by political parties for presidential and national assembly elections will kick off on Wednesday, 28th September 2022 while that for governorship and state assembly elections will commence by Wednesday 12th October 2022.

INEC Chairman added that the last day for campaigns for presidential and national assembly elections will be midnight, Thursday 23rd February, 2023 while the deadline for governorship and state assembly campaigns is midnight, Thursday, 9th March 2023.
