1. Buhari Postpones Assent To Electoral Bill Till Friday

President Muhammadu Buhari has postponed the signing of the re-worked Electoral Act Amendment Bill till Friday, February 25.

According to Channels Television, a source close to the Presidency made the new date known in an interview on Wednesday.

The source, who had earlier said President Buhari would sign the bill on Wednesday, confirmed that President Buhari would sign the revised document around 12pm on Friday.

2. Zamfara State Deputy Governor, Aliyu Gusau Impeached

The Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Mahdi Gusau has been impeached by lawmakers in the state House of Assembly.

The lawmaker impeached Gusau during plenary on Wednesday after the House received the report of the committee.

The Chief Judge of the state, Justice Kulu Aliyu, had set up a committee to investigate the allegations against Gusau.

The panel had Justice Halidu Tanko-Soba as Chairman, with Oladipo Okpeseyi (SAN), as Deputy Chairman and Abdul-Atadoga Ibrahim (SAN), Hussaini Zakariyau, (SAN), Amina Tanimu-Marafa, Alhaji Sani Mande and Ahmad Buhari-Rabah, as members.

Okpeseyi while presenting the copies of the report to the Speaker said they were not empowered to talk about the report with any one.

3. A Party That Can’t Hold Convention, Can’t Rule Nigeria – Wike Mocks APC

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has mocked the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over its inability to hold a National Convention yet despite many attempts.

The Governor said the APC lacks the capacity to put its house in order and it reflects in its inability to manage the challenges facing the country and its people.

Naija News reports Wike made the submission on Wednesday in Owerri, the Imo State capital at a special grand reception organized to celebrate the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu by the Imo State chapter of the PDP.

The Rivers State Governor, therefore, called on Nigerians to ensure they vote out the APC at both the federal and state levels during the 2023 general elections.

Speaking about Imo State, Wike also tackled the incumbent State Governor, Hope Uzodinma saying the situation where a man who came fourth during elections become the Governor will never happen again.

4. ASUU Strike Declared Illegal After Wednesday’s Meeting With FG Ends In Deadlock

The federal government has declared the current strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as illegal, after the conciliation meeting ended in deadlock early Wednesday morning.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige while addressing stakeholders at the meeting, disclosed that the union did not go through the normal process before embarking on the industrial action.

He described the ongoing strike as a clear breach of the law, saying it did not give the Federal Government the minimum 14 days strike notice prescribed by the law, prior to the strike.

5. 2023: PDP Won’t Make IPOB, ESN An Enemy Like APC, Buhari Govt – Ayu

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyorchia Ayu, has promised that his administration will promote unity amongst citizens even as the opposition party hopes to return to Aso Rock come 2023, Naija News reports.

Ayu who expressed confidence that PDP will win the forthcoming 2023 general elections, said the All Progressive Congress (APC) administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari had made the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) an enemy instead of treating the root cause.

The party chairman noted that political imbalance, marginalization of the South-East people, was the root cause of the agitations for secession by IPOB and the ESN.

Ayu said PDP would handle southeast issues like the late President Umaru Yar’Adua settled the Niger Delta agitation when it hopefully assumes power in 2023.

6. Aisha Buhari Storms Senate Chambers

Aisha Buhari, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday stormed the Nigerian Senate Chambers.

Naija News gathered that Aisha becomes the first First Lady to be received into the Senate Chambers by its leadership.

It was gathered that the wife of the President is at the Red chamber to witness the laying of the report of the Senate Constitution Review Committee.

Aisha Buhari was accompanied to the Chambers by the Minister of Women Affairs Mrs Pullen Tallen; Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed and some of her personal aides.

The Senate had deferred the submission of the report during the proceedings to allow for the arrival of Buhari’s wife.

7. Court Orders Ex-Governor Yari To Temporarily Forfeit Properties And Funds To FG

An Abuja Federal High Court has on Wednesday ruled that the former governor of Zamfara State Abdulaziz Yari temporarily forfeits about 10 properties and some funds in his account to the government.

Naija News reports that Justice Obiora Egwuatu gave the order while ruling in an ex-parte application by the lawyer to the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), Osuobeni Ekoi Akponimisingha.

He said the seizure would last for a period of 60days and help the ICPC conduct a proper investigation before the commission apply for final forfeiture.

The judge also ordered the ICPC to publicize the order so that those who were affected by the forfeiture could come forward and lay their complaints.

8. Senator Nasiha Confirmed As New Zamfara Deputy Governor

Senator Hassan Nasiha has been confirmed as the new Deputy Governor of Zamfara by the state House of Assembly.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) federal lawmaker was confirmed on Wednesday following his nomination by the state Governor, Bello Matawalle.

Nasiha (Zamfara Central – APC) was appointed shortly after the assembly impeached the former Deputy Governor, Aliyu Gusau during plenary on Wednesday.

Matawalle, who wasted no time, sent a letter to the assembly signed by Secretary to the State Government, Kabiru Balarabe, seeking the screening of Nasiha.

The Speaker of the House of Assembly, Nasiru Muazu Magarya, read the governor’s letter during plenary.

When he appeared before the assembly, the nominee was asked to “bow and leave” in line with the tradition of the legislative house.

9. 2023: Details Of Bala Mohammed’s Meeting With Obasanjo Emerge

The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed on Wednesday visited former Nigeria President, Olusegun Obasanjo at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Mohammed has intention to contest in the presidential election in 2023 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Governor Mohammed arrived Obasanjo’s penthouse residence located within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta alongside his aides around 11:30am.

The Bauchi state Governor went straight into a closed-door meeting with the elder statesman which lasted for about an hour.

Mohammed while speaking with newsmen after the meeting disclosed that he met with the former President over his 2023 ambition.

The PDP chieftain further stated that leaders in the country should be appointed based on merit.

10. Fire Breaks Out At Federal Ministry Of Finance In Abuja

A building at the Federal Ministry of Finance, Abuja was razed by fire in the early hours of Wednesday.

The Federal Ministry of Finance has reacted to the fire outbreak at its headquarters in the Central Business District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

However, the fire was put out by personnel of the Federal Fire Service as stated by the spokesperson of the Fire Service, Abraham Paul.

Addressing newsmen hours after the incident, the spokesman of the ministry, Olajide Osundun, said the fire outbreak was caused by a faulty inverter battery used in powering the building.

Osundun stated that the faulty battery exploded and affected other batteries used in powering the inverter, adding that the fire outbreak only affected the inverter room located in the basement of the building.

The ministry spokesman said that no life was lost in the fire incident and no other sections of the building were affected inn the inferno.
