Why Buhari Extended IGP Adamu’s Tenure – Police Affairs Minister

The reason why President Muhammadu Buhari extended the tenure of Mohammed Adamu as the Inspector-General of Police for three months has been revealed.

Naija News reports that the tenure of the police boss expired on Monday after attaining the mandatory 35 years in service.

However, due to the calls by Nigerians to name Adamu’s replacement, the presidency on Tuesday noted that the President will name a new police boss soon.

Adamu has remained at his duty post since Monday, fuelling speculation that his tenure could have been ‘secretly’ extended.

But speaking to State HouseCorrespondents on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammad Dingyadi, said President Buhari extended Adamu’s tenure “to allow for a robust and efficient process of appointing a new IGP.”

Dingyadi noted that the three-month extension was meant to ensure that the right candidate was appointed to replace Adamu.

The minister, however, noted that the President has not broken any law or left a lacuna in the system, adding that he can decide to extend the tenure of Adamu for three months.

He said, “Mr President has decided that the present IGP, Mohammed Adamu, will continue to serve as the IG for the next three months to allow for a robust and efficient process of appointing a new IGP.

“This is not unconnected to the desire of Mr President to not only have a smooth handover but to also ensure that the right officer is appointed into that position.

“Mr President is extending by three months to allow him to get into the process of allowing a new one.“
