1. Supreme Court Affirms Yahaya Bello As Kogi State Governor

The appeal by the Peoples Democratic Party against the victory of Governor Yahaya Bello at the November 16, 2019 Governorship election has been dismissed by the Supreme Court.

A seven-man panel led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, in a unanimous judgment, affirmed Bello’s election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

In the lead judgment prepared by Justice Inyang Okoro but read on his behalf by another member of the panel, Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, the apex court affirmed the earlier July 4, 2020 judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja and the May 23, 2020 majority verdict of the election petition tribunal, which had both upheld the Bello’s victory at the poll.

2. There Is So Much ‘Mess’ In The APC – Buhari Admits

President Muhammadu Buhari has opined that the All Progressives Congress, APC, was embroiled in bitter and unnecessary squabbles, despite its dominance at all levels of government.

This, the President noted while he was Inaugurating the APC’s Executive-Legislative Consultative Committee at the Council Chamber, presidential villa, Abuja.

Buhari said the problems within the party has cost it governorship and legislative seats during elections.

He warned that such should not be allowed to happen again, while noting that the meeting was called to avert the occurrences in the future.

3. NECO Announces Deadline For 2020 SSCE Registration

The National Examination Council (NECO) has announced September 10 as the deadline for schools to register their candidates for the 2020 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

This was announced on Monday in Abuja by Prof. Godswill Obioma, the Registrar/Chief Executive of the exam body who told stakeholders that NECO is in disagreement with the Federal Ministry of Education which announced an extension of the registration period for the exam.

Obioma explained that the deadline is to allow NECO to prepare effectively and put all necessary logistics in place for the examination.

He also used the opportunity to reiterate that the 2020 NECO/SSCE (Internal) would commence on Oct. 5, and would end on Nov. 18.

4. Buhari Names Osinbajo, Malami, Others In Exco-Legislative Party Forum

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday inaugurated a government Consultative forum including representatives of the Executive and the legislative arms.

While constituting the forum at the Council Chambers in the State House, Abuja, President Buhari named Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo as the chairman of the NASS forum.

The Committee will work to foster a harmonious working relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government in such a way that they will both effectively work to advance the Next Level manifesto of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

5. NDDC Pays Tuition Fees Of Students On Its Scholarship Scheme

Director of Corporate Affairs, Niger Delta Development Commission, Charles Odili on Monday, August 31 disclosed to newsmen that the commission paid $5,901,000 to one hundred and ninety-seven (197) scholarship beneficiaries of 2019.

According to the commission, it has also commenced payment procedures for 94 beneficiaries of 2018.

Odili while given further details to the Vanguard inquiry on Monday (today) said among the 197 beneficiaries were 12 PhD – 2016 and 13 PHD – 2019, making a total of 43 who got $30,000 each, amounting to $1,290,000.

The director revealed further that 154 MSC beneficiaries of 2019 were paid $30,000 each, totalling $4, 420,000, making the overall total to be $5,910,000. He again gave the description of 94 beneficiaries of 2018 still awaiting payment as 40 PhD and 54 MSC.

6. President Buhari Meets RCCG GO, Pastor Adeboye

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday met with General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Pastor Enoch Adeboye.

Naija News reports that the private meeting between the duo was held at the president’s office at around 3:00 pm.

This was made known by the President’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad on Twitter.

He, however, did not disclose the reason for the visit.

7. Lagos Health Commissioner, Akin Abayomi Speaks After Recovering From COVID-19

Professor Akin Abayomi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health has urged Nigerians to keep observing all necessary COVID-19 protocols in public spaces and also remain vigilant at home.

He also assured that he is back, better, and bouncing after fully recovering from the COVID-19 infection.

The Commissioner stated this in a message on his verified Twitter account on Monday after he recovered from the coronavirus infection.

As previously reported by Naija News, Prof. Abayomi according to a statement from the Lagos State government on Monday, tested negative to the virus after nine days of isolation and treatment.

8. Lagos State University Announces Guidelines For Resumption Of Students

The Lagos State University (LASU) has disclosed some guidelines that will be operational as students of the University prepare to return to campus.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun revealed that the students will resume in batches.

According to Prof. Fagbohun who spoke on Monday during a radio programme on Eko 89.7 FM, students in 400, 500 and 600 levels would be the first to resume. Later, other students in the 300 and 200 levels of their studies will also resume.

The VC explained further that the students will undergo two months of intensive lecture before writing examinations.

Full COVID-19 protocols will be in place while compliance will be expected to be total, the VC added.

9. APC Congratulates Bello Over His Victory At Supreme Court

The Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Kogi State, Alhaji Abdulahi Bello has described the Supreme Court verdict affirming Governor Bello as the winner of last November governorship election as a well-deserved victory.

He subsequently called on all opposition parties, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) to join hands with the All progressives Congress, APC to move the state forward.

It will be recalled the Supreme Court on Monday upheld the decision of the tribunal and Appeal courts to declare Governor Bello as the winner of the election affirmed him as the state Governor for a second term.
