FG Declares Friday As Public Holiday

The federal government has in the build up to the Saturday, February 23rd re-scheduled elections, declared Friday, 22nd February as a public holiday.

Bankers and other essential services providers were however exempted from the holiday.

This was disclosed via a statement on Wednesday from the ministry of interior.

“Federal Government declares Friday 22, February 2019 as work-free day. Those providing essential duties and bankers are excluded,”

“The work-free day is to enable citizens return to their poling units for the reschedule Presidential & National Assembly elections.

“Security agencies have been directed to ensure safety of lives and property before, during and after the general election.”

Earlier on Wednesday, the federal government had also ordered the immediate payment of February salary to civil servants to enable them travel and participate in Saturday’s election.

Naija News recalls that the presidential and National Assembly elections were earlier scheduled to hold on Saturday, February 16, but was however, postponed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which cited logistical reasons for the postponement.

Nigerians will now vote on February 23, and March 9 for the presidential/national assembly and the governorship/state assembly elections respectively.
