President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the newly inaugurated President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Felix Tshisekedi.

Buhari congratulated him on his election victory and subsequent inauguration as the president of the African country.

The congratulatory message was contained in a statement on Friday signed by Mr Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), which reads:

“President Muhammadu Buhari congratulates newly elected President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on his victory and inauguration.”

“The President commends the Government and people of DRC for their determination and commitment to democratic principles, which resulted in the first peaceful transfer of democratic power since independence in 1960.”

“The Nigerian leader and ECOWAS Chairman, also salutes the Congolese people for peacefully exercising their franchise during the national elections in their country.”

“Following the affirmation of President Tshisekedi’s victory at the December 30, 2018 polls, by the Constitutional Court of the country, President Buhari urges all Congolese, especially political stakeholders to rally behind the new leader and support his vision to build ‘‘a modern, peaceful, democratic State for every citizen,’’ as succinctly expressed in his inauguration speech on Thursday.”

“Recognizing the important role played by former President Joseph Kabila in the historic electoral process and transition, President Buhari assures the new Congolese leader of Nigeria’s readiness to work with his government to consolidate peace, stability, reconciliation and development in the Central African country.”

Naija News recalls Tshisekedi, 55, succeeds outgoing head of state Joseph Kabila, 47, who had been in power since the assassination of his father Laurent-Désiré Kabila in January 2001.

This is officially the first peaceful transmission of power since independence of the DRC on June 30, 1960.
