The record setting Manchester City have an incredible opportunity to secure the Premier League title at the next Manchester derby. If Man City beat Man U, then they would open up a 19-point lead over United with only 18 points left to claim this season. While Man U wouldn’t be Man City’s guard of honour, they would have to suffer a packed Etihad celebrating the return of the Premier League trophy after three seasons. The pressure is on Man U to spoil the party but Guardiola and Manchester City have proven there are no challenges too great to overcome.

The Man City of today have come on leaps and bounds since the 16/17 season. That season, Man City only just secured Champions League football with a three-point lead over Arsenal. City drew to Stoke, lost to Everton, and failed to win any other trophies. Thanks to Guardiola’s fine management this season, City have realised their full potential. Having already won the Carabao Cup in February, City have set their eyes on a grandstand finish in the Manchester derby. How have they achieved so much this season?

It all started this summer. City, now the fifth richest football club in the world, spent big in the transfer window. Guardiola wasn’t afraid to pay high prices for the players he needed. In defence, City brought in the established Kyle Walker for £50 million, Monaco’s Danilo for £52.5 million and £35 million won them Ederson in goal. Eye-watering transfer fees didn’t seem to bother the City board and Guardiola was given a blank check. These transfers would look foolish if their form didn’t improve from the previous season. Luckily, City fans have little to complain about, given their team’s performances this season.

With a squad strengthened in all the right places, City achieved peerless form in the first half of the season. A record 18 wins saw City become the presumed Premier League champions before 2018 had even begun. Runs like this mean that City have only lost one game in the league. Their attacking style of play has also seen success in Europe. They topped their group in the Champions league with impressive successive wins over the strong Italian side Lazio. Strong displays abroad have given City 3/1 odds in the football betting with bet365 to win the Champions League. City’s winning formula arguably works wherever they play.

With a triple still possible this season, Manchester City under Guardiola’s stewardship go from strength to strength. A win against their rivals Manchester United at the Etihad to tie up the Premier League would be a sensational end to their season. The title isn’t the only thing at stake in the business end of the season. Guardiola has the opportunity to make Manchester City the first Premier League team to earn a hundred points in a single season. Before City fans can celebrate such historic records, however, they must give their full support to the team at a crucial Manchester derby.
