The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Wednesday destroyed fake and expired drugs and unwholesome products worth N80 million.

The Director-General of the agency, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, who destroyed the drugs at a site in Kuje, FCT-Abuja, said the products were seized in the Federal Capital Territory and Nasarawa State.

She said, “The fake and expired products we are destroying today are worth over N80 million and they were collected from FCT and Nasarawa State.

“It will interest you to know that some of the expired products were voluntarily handed over to NAFDAC by the owners while others were mopped up from shelves by our task force.”

Adeyeye said that the periodic destruction of the counterfeit drugs and products by the agency indicated that NAFDAC is tackling fake drugs in the right manner.

She stated further that those involved in selling fake drugs within the period were arrested by the agency, adding that while some have been prosecuted, others were facing trials in court.

She therefore, commended the other government agencies like Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Custom Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Consumer Protection Council (CPC) and Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), among others, for their support.

The director-general also assured that the agency would not relent in its efforts in ensuring that those involved in fake, expired and unwholesome products are brought to book.
