New minimum wage committee gets marching orders from President Buhari.

President Muhammadu Buhari, today at the council chamber of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, inaugurated a 30-member tripartite National Minimum Wage Committee.

The committee has a mandate to negotiate a new national minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

Present at the inauguration aside the committee members, were several top government officials including governors.

Conspicuously absent at the inauguration were Governors Nyesom Wike of Rivers and Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe, who are also members of the committee.

In his remarks at the inauguration ceremony, President Buhari noted that the current minimum wage being used in the country has already expired.

The President gave assurances that an executive bill will be sent to the National Assembly upon completion of work by the committee and then the recommendations can be passed into law.

The tripartite committee is headed by a former Head of Service, Ama Pepple, the current Minister of Labour and employment, Chris Ngige, will serve as deputy chairman, while the chairman, National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, Richard Egbule, will serve as the secretary of the committee.
