Ex-INEC official claims N30m received from Diezani Alison-Madueke, contributed to the success of the 2015 general elections.

An ex-administrative secretary with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Christian Nwosu, says he received N30 million from former petroleum resources minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, but the money was used for logistics during the 2015 elections.

Nwosu, alongside two other INEC officials were dragged before the court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  for allegedly taking a bribe of N264.88m from Diezani Alison-Madueke.

Speaking before a federal high court in Lagos on Thursday, Nwosu admitted receiving N30m from the N264.8m in the build-up to the 2015 general election, but denied using it for personal purposes as he claimed the amount was spent on logistics for the election.

“I did not personally benefit from the N30m,” Nwosu said.

“The ad hoc staff benefited because the election went smoothly with the assistance of the logistics support. My commission was aware of the money and the evidence was that the election went smoothly.”

He added that he was ordered on phone by a man simply identified as Togba to visit the bank to collect the money.

Nwosu had on October 7, told the presiding judge in the matter that he was coerced by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) into admitting that he collected the money from Diezani.
