The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is Nigeria’s premier anti-graft agency, established in 2003 to investigate and prosecute financial crimes, including money laundering, advance fee fraud (419), and public sector corruption. Under the leadership of Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede, the commission has shifted toward an intelligence-led policing model, securing over 7,500 convictions and recovering hundreds of billions of Naira in assets as of early 2026.

High-Profile Cases in 2026

As of February 2026, the EFCC is managing several landmark cases that are critical for national accountability. These include:

  • Godwin Emefiele: Ongoing trials regarding a $6.2 million fraud and unauthorized contract awards, with major hearings scheduled for March 2026.
  • Yahaya Bello: The former Kogi State Governor faces a 19-count charge involving over N80 billion, with the trial continuing in the Federal High Court, Abuja.
  • Real Estate Crackdown: In February 2026, Chairman Olukoyede issued a stern warning to real estate managers, identifying the sector as a primary conduit for laundering illicit funds.

Institutional Reforms & Regional Leadership

In October 2025, Ola Olukoyede was re-elected as the President of the Network of Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIWA) for a second three-year term. This role underscores the EFCC’s lead in “borderless investigations” across the ECOWAS region. Domestically, the commission has expanded its reach with the creation of the Awka Zonal Directorate in early 2026 to intensify operations in Anambra and Imo States.

EFCC Recruitment 2026 Warning

It is important for the public to note that, as of February 2026, the EFCC is not currently conducting a nationwide recruitment exercise. The commission has issued several warnings regarding fraudulent websites and social media ads claiming to offer enlistment for SSCE, ND, and Degree holders. Official career updates are strictly communicated via the commission’s verified portal.
