Geography and Borders

Katsina shares an international border with the Republic of Niger to the north. Domestically, it is bordered by Kaduna State to the south, Kano and Jigawa States to the east, and Zamfara State to the west.

Governance: From 1987 to Date

Since its creation from old Kaduna State, Katsina has been a major political power center:

  • Abdullahi Sarki Mukhtar (1987–1988): The first Military Governor.
  • Saidu Barda (1992–1993): The first Executive Governor.
  • Umaru Musa Yar’Adua (1999–2007): Transformed the state before becoming Nigeria’s President.
  • Ibrahim Shema (2007–2015): Focused on free education and road networks.
  • Aminu Bello Masari (2015–2023): Led the state during a period of significant security challenges.
  • Dikko Umaru Radda (2023–Present): Currently implementing the “Building a Future” agenda with a focus on community-led security.

Education and Landmarks

The state is home to the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University and the Federal University, Dutsin-Ma. Notable landmarks include the Gobarau Minaret (built over 600 years ago) and the Kusugu Well in Daura.
