It’s Now Official: George Weah Is Liberia’s President-Elect

– George Weah officially declared Liberia’s President-elect.

– He defeated the country’s incumbent Vice President to emerge winner of the country’s presidential run off election. 

From football pitch to presidential palace, George Weah is Liberia’s new president.

Ex-football star, George Weah, has officially been announced as the winner of Liberia’s presidential run off elections by the country’s National Elections Commission (NEC).

Mr Jerome Korkoya, chairman of the commission, announced on Friday in Monrovia, that George Weah who contested on the platform of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), is set to take over from Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.

The final counting shows Weah polled a total of 722,185 votes representing 61.5 per cent, to defeat incumbent Vice President Joseph Boakai of the Unity Party (UP) who polled 457,579 which represents 28.5 per cent.

In declaring him winner, Korkoya said:

“Final results stand at the CDC, 722,185 votes representing 61.5 per cent; the Unity Party, 457,579 representing 28.5 per cent.

“Pursuant to the authority vested in the commission by the constitution and the new electoral law of the Republic of Liberia and based on the result just read, I, acting on behalf of the Board of Commissioners, do hereby declare the presidential ticket of Senator George Weah and Jewel Howard Taylor as the winner of the Dec. 26 presidential runoff election.”

With this result, Weah is set to be installed as the 25th president of Liberia with effect from the third working Monday of January, 2018.
