The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) has voiced support for the planned payment of a ₦70,000 transport allowance to public service workers in Nigeria by the federal government.
The council clarified that the allowance was part of an agreement reached between the government and organised labour after negotiations on workers’ welfare and rising transportation costs.
Naija News reports that the position of the JNPSNC was made known in a statement on Sunday by its National Secretary, Olowoyo Gbenga, addressed to the council’s affiliated unions and state councils.
He said the payment is a welcome development, as it is expected to cushion the unbearable cost of transportation many workers have faced.
“The payment of N70,000 transportation allowance to Nigerian workers is a welcome development, considering the unbearable transportation costs currently experienced by public servants across the country,” he said.
Gbenga added that the agreement was reached after more than six hours of meeting between labour leaders and government representatives.
Speaking on the rejection of the planned payment by the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Gbenga clarified that the Congress was not part of the negotiations that produced the agreement.
He however added that the TUC was entitled to express its views on labour-related matters.
The JNPSNC secretary added that any proposal by the TUC for a higher transportation allowance would be welcome if it resulted in additional benefits for public servants.
