Workers Knock NLC, TUC, Threaten Indefinite Nationwide Strike

The Federal Workers Forum has threatened to mobilise federal workers for an indefinite nationwide strike over rising insecurity and unresolved wage-related issues.

The threat was contained in a communiqué issued after an online meeting of the forum on Sunday, according to The PUNCH.

The forum criticised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), accusing both labour centres of failing to provide leadership on issues affecting workers.

The communiqué was signed by the forum’s National Coordinator, Mr Emelieze, and Secretary, Mr Ayo Ogundele.

According to the group, an online poll conducted among members showed overwhelming support for immediate industrial action.

The workers alleged that the implementation of the July 2024 minimum wage adjustment failed to deliver meaningful benefits to federal workers.

According to the forum, only ₦40,000 was added uniformly across salary levels and the amount was subjected to taxation.

The group also claimed that a promised 40 per cent peculiar allowance announced by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, for implementation from May 1, 2026, was later rejected by the Office of the Accountant-General.

“May 2026 salaries have been paid, but no wage award was given as promised by the Minister of Finance, and consequential adjustments remain outstanding,” the communiqué stated.

The forum further complained about outstanding entitlements owed to federal workers.

Among the issues raised were two months of wage award arrears dating back to July 2024, promotion arrears and unpaid Duty Tour Allowance claims.

The group alleged that several outstanding payments had remained unresolved for years.

The workers also rejected a recent ₦100,000 minimum wage proposal reportedly supported by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.

The forum described the proposal as a “Greek gift” and a deliberate attempt to suppress workers’ earnings.

It instead demanded a living wage, full payment of outstanding arrears and a cost-of-living allowance.

Beyond wage matters, the forum expressed concern over worsening insecurity across the country.

The group said many federal workers now live in fear because of kidnappings and violent attacks.

It specifically referenced recent abductions involving children and teachers in Oyo and Borno states.

The forum called on the NLC and TUC leadership to urgently engage the Federal Government on insecurity and economic hardship.

It also urged the government to explore all lawful means, including negotiations, to secure the release of hostages, particularly abducted schoolchildren and teachers.

In addition, the forum called on the National Assembly to consider legislation on civilian firearm ownership and demanded the convocation of a sovereign national conference to discuss the country’s challenges.
