Germany Reach Agreement With Jurgen Klopp To Become New Head Coach
Germany have moved a step closer to appointing Jürgen Klopp as their new men’s national team head coach after the German Football Association (DFB) confirmed a preliminary agreement has been reached with the former Liverpool manager.
Jurgen Klopp met DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke in New York on Friday, where both parties agreed on the key terms of a proposed contract.
The appointment is expected to follow the resignation of Julian Nagelsmann after Germany’s disappointing early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a statement, the DFB said: “DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and DFB Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke held their first in-depth meeting with Jürgen Klopp in New York yesterday to discuss the possibility of him taking over as head coach (Bundestrainer) of the German national team. During this constructive discussion, the two sides reached consensus on the core points of a potential contract.
“Negotiations will continue next week. Both parties expressed optimism that a final deal can be signed on the condition that an agreement is reached with Klopp’s current employer Red Bull Group.”
The DFB added that any agreement would still require formal approval at a joint meeting of the supervisory board and general meeting of DFB GmbH und Co. KG.
A separate federation statement read: “DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and DFB Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke held their first in-depth talks with Jürgen Klopp in New York regarding his potential appointment as national team coach.
“During the constructive exchange, an agreement was reached on the key points of a potential contract. Talks will continue next week.
“Both sides are confident that the negotiations, subject to an agreement with Klopp’s current employer, Red Bull, can ultimately be successfully concluded.”
Klopp has been Red Bull’s Head of Global Football since January 2025 after stepping away from management at the end of his successful nine-year spell at Liverpool in the summer of 2024.
If the remaining negotiations are completed as expected, the 59-year-old will sign a four-year contract and take charge of Germany for the first time, marking his first role in international football.
