Jürgen Klopp Set To Become Germany Coach As Julian Nagelsmann Faces Exit
Jurgen Klopp is on course to become Germany’s next head coach, with multiple German media reports identifying the former Liverpool manager as the leading candidate to replace Julian Nagelsmann after the country’s disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Nagelsmann is expected to be dismissed following Germany’s shock last-32 exit to Paraguay. Bild reported earlier today, July 2, that the 38-year-old held a three-hour meeting with officials of the German Football Association (DFB) in Frankfurt, where he was offered a severance package worth seven million euros.
Klopp, who stepped away from management after leaving Liverpool in 2024, is currently Red Bull’s head of global football, overseeing the company’s network of clubs across Austria, Germany, Brazil, the United States and Japan. Sky Germany and Sueddeutsche Zeitung have also named him as the overwhelming favourite to take charge of the four-time world champions.
Germany’s penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay marked a third successive early World Cup exit after group stage eliminations in Russia and Qatar. It was also the nation’s first knockout match at the tournament since winning the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf announced an immediate investigation into the World Cup failure on Tuesday. Nagelsmann, whose contract was renewed in January 2025 until 2028, has come under increasing pressure following the latest setback.
