Asamoah Gyan Says Colombia Deserved World Cup Win After Ghana’s Tame Display

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has criticised the Black Stars’ performance in their 1-0 FIFA World Cup defeat to Colombia, saying the team fell well short of expectations and deserved to be eliminated.

Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign ended after Colombia took a first-half chance and held on for victory, sealing their place in the next round while sending the Black Stars home.

Reacting after the match earlier today, July 4, Ghana’s all-time leading scorer said the team lacked the urgency and attacking drive needed in a knockout fixture.

“Today’s performance was below average, no sense of urgency,” Gyan was quoted as saying by Ghanaian sports platform Joy Online.

The former Sunderland striker also questioned Ghana’s lack of attacking presence after going behind, arguing that the Black Stars failed to commit enough players into dangerous areas as they chased an equaliser.

“We (Ghana) did not have men in the box,” Gyan said.

Gyan praised Colombia’s approach, noting that they continued to attack even after taking the lead instead of sitting back to protect their advantage.

“Colombia were ahead but kept fighting to score more.”

He concluded that there was little argument over the result.

“To summarise everything, Colombia deserved the win,” he added.
