Eric Chelle Tips Portugal For World Cup Glory Ahead Of Super Eagles Friendly

Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has tipped Portugal to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing Roberto Martínez’s side as genuine contenders for the title.

Eric Chelle remarked ahead of Nigeria’s international friendly against the former European champions on Wednesday night, praising the quality and depth within the Portuguese squad as they continue preparations for the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Portugal, widely regarded among the favourites by football pundits, have been drawn in Group K alongside DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Chelle said the encounter would provide a valuable test for his rebuilding Super Eagles side.

“This team, in one month, can be the next world champion. This is a big chance for us to play against Portugal in their country,” Chelle told a press conference.

Portugal forward Francisco Trincão also spoke highly of Nigeria, warning that the Super Eagles would provide a stern examination despite the friendly status of the fixture.

Nigeria head into the game in encouraging form, having recorded victories over Zimbabwe and Jamaica, while also holding Poland to a draw in their last three friendly outings.

Trincão, however, insisted Portugal’s focus remains on refining their game plan and building momentum ahead of the World Cup.

Speaking on Tuesday, the former Barcelona winger compared Nigeria’s physical style to that of DR Congo, one of Portugal’s group-stage opponents at the World Cup.

“We need to take advantage of the game. These two teams are comparable. Both of them are physical. We must concentrate on what we have been practising, examine our options and learn some subtleties from them,” he said.

“We will strive to perform at our best. They are a team comparable to Congo. We will play in accordance with our training. Our focus will be on ourselves rather than on Nigeria. It will be challenging. We aim to deliver a strong performance and enter the World Cup with confidence.”
