Super Eagles Of Nigeria Will Be Demanding – Portugal Coach Martinez Admits
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has labelled Nigeria a “demanding opponent” as his side prepares to face the Super Eagles in an international friendly at 8:45 p.m. later today, June 10.
Martinez believes the encounter will provide a useful assessment for his team before their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against DR Congo on June 17, with the Portuguese manager highlighting similarities between the challenges posed by African opposition.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, June 9, Martinez said the fixture would help Portugal sharpen key areas of their game while also testing the readiness of his squad.
“We have an opportunity to work on aspects that are similar to what we’ll face against Congo,” Martinez said.
“It’s a different African side [Nigeria]. It will be a demanding opponent, who will be a test to prepare our squad.”
The former Belgium manager added that Portugal would approach the match with the intention of winning while also giving valuable minutes to members of his squad ahead of their departure for the World Cup.
“Our emphasis is on the individual, providing playing time to those who require it. The primary goal is to prepare the players for the flight to Miami for the World Cup,” he said.
“We aim to win. This is an opportunity to work on elements that I believe are similar to those we will face against Congo. They are a challenging opponent, and this serves as another test.”
Martinez also confirmed that first-choice goalkeeper Diogo Costa will remain in goal for the entire match, even as other players are rotated during the game.
“We will make adjustments throughout the match; the plan is for Diogo Costa to complete the full 90 minutes while the other players receive some playing time,” he said.
Portugal head into the friendly after a 2-1 win over Chile, while Nigeria drew 2-2 with Poland in their most recent outing. The match is expected to be the final major test for the Portuguese side ahead of the World Cup.
