60-40 Formula Sparks Ticket Reshuffle In Kano NDC
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has replaced several candidates earlier submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano State, citing the need to uphold a power-sharing arrangement reached between both groups ahead of the forthcoming elections.
According to Daily Post, a document signed by the Kano State Chairman of the party, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, and made available to the public, indicated that the changes were made to align with an existing agreement between the party leadership and the Kwankwasiyya movement.
The document was copied to the party’s national leader, Seriake Dickson; the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; and the NDC North-West Zonal Chairman, Alhaji Muhammadu Rabi’u Sabo Bakinzuwo.
According to the revised list released by the party, Barrister Isma’il Idris Sani was approved for Kumbotso Federal Constituency, while Nasiru Ali Ahmed emerged as the candidate for Nassarawa Federal Constituency.
Others on the updated list include Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id for Kano Municipal, Barrister Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim for Doguwa/Tudun Wada, Muhammad Hamisu Abubakar for Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa, Ibrahim Bashir Bango for Sumaila/Takai and Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mairigar Fata for Gwale Federal Constituency.
The party also announced adjustments to its State House of Assembly tickets in Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo and Dawakin Kudu constituencies.
60-40 Sharing Formula
Explaining the reason for the changes, party officials said there was an existing agreement between the NDC structure and the Kwankwasiyya bloc on the sharing of elective positions and party offices.
Under the arrangement, the Kwankwasiyya faction was expected to receive 60 per cent of available positions, while the NDC structure would retain the remaining 40 per cent.
However, party leaders reportedly became dissatisfied with the initial allocation of tickets, arguing that it did not adequately reflect the agreed formula.
The situation, sources said, generated concerns within the party and threatened to create internal disagreements if not addressed promptly.
Speaking on the development, the party’s spokesperson, Comrade Ibrahim Waya, said the leadership took urgent steps to ensure compliance with the agreement and preserve unity within the alliance.
“There was an understanding on the 60-40 sharing formula between the party leadership and Senator Kwankwaso. The action was taken urgently to avoid crisis within the party,” the media platform quoted Waya as saying.
He maintained that the changes were necessary to protect the integrity of the agreement reached by both sides and prevent disputes that could undermine preparations for the elections.
