Many Hospitalized As Fresh Gas Leak Hits Ogun School

A fresh suspected gas leak has caused panic among residents of Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State after several students and workers at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, located around Epe Garage, fell ill and required medical treatment.

Naija News reports that the incident happened on Wednesday during school hours when students and members of staff reportedly noticed a strong and unpleasant smell within the school environment.

According to Punch, shortly after, many of them began experiencing breathing problems, weakness and other health challenges linked to exposure to the substance.

Those affected were taken to the General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode, where they received treatment.

Some victims were still under medical care as of Wednesday following complaints of discomfort, breathing difficulties and, in some cases, loss of consciousness.

The latest occurrence has increased concerns among residents because it is the third reported gas-related incident in the area within the last two months.

In April, about 40 students were hospitalized after a similar event, while another incident in May reportedly affected around 100 students and required medical intervention.

The Ogun State Government had earlier revealed that monitoring devices installed in the area detected methane gas as the likely source of the emissions responsible for the repeated incidents.

Speaking on the development, the Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, confirmed that the government was aware of the incident.

He disclosed that monitoring equipment had already helped officials identify the source of the gas emission.

According to him, investigations showed that the leakage was coming from an area behind Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu-Ode.

He added that the state government had begun taking steps to tackle the problem and stop future occurrences.
