Tinubu Rolls Out 79 Ambulances For Tertiary Hospitals
President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday unveiled 79 locally assembled advanced ambulances for tertiary hospitals across Nigeria.
Naija News reports that the ambulances are expected to strengthen emergency healthcare delivery and reduce avoidable deaths nationwide.
They were commissioned in Lagos by the Chief Medical Director of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo, on behalf of the President.
The ambulances will be distributed to federal tertiary health institutions under the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System.
The intervention is part of activities marking the third anniversary of the Tinubu administration.
Speaking during the commissioning, Adeyemo said the deployment reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to building a more responsive emergency healthcare system under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Adeyemo said the ambulances would improve the speed and quality of emergency medical response.
He noted that many critical cases become fatal because patients are unable to access care on time.
According to Adeyemo, “These ambulances will improve the movement of patients from homes, schools, markets, highways and other locations to hospitals where they can receive timely medical attention.
“This will significantly reduce avoidable deaths and complications arising from delayed access to care.”
The LUTH CMD described the vehicles as Advanced Life Support ambulances equipped with modern medical and communication systems.
He said the communication systems would allow hospitals to be alerted before patients arrive, enabling faster treatment preparation.
Adeyemo added that the ambulances were fully assembled in Nigeria, including the installation of emergency medical equipment.
“These ambulances are a testament to Nigeria’s ability to produce world-class emergency response vehicles locally. Beyond improving emergency healthcare delivery, this initiative will stimulate local manufacturing, create employment opportunities and strengthen confidence in indigenous capacity,” he stated.
Adeyemo disclosed that the ambulances operate on dual-fuel systems using both Premium Motor Spirit and Compressed Natural Gas.
He said the feature aligned with the administration’s energy diversification and sustainability policies.
The CMD said the project aligned with ongoing health sector reforms led by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate.
He said improving emergency transportation was as important as upgrading hospital infrastructure.
“Healthcare facilities must be accessible when emergencies occur. Efficient emergency transportation is essential to saving lives,” he added.
Adeyemo urged state governments, local councils and private institutions to leverage local production capacity to address emergency medical transport needs.
The Federal Government said the nationwide distribution of the ambulances would strengthen referral systems, improve access to lifesaving care and support efforts to reduce morbidity and mortality across the country.
