Kasper Schmeichel Retires At 39 After Shoulder Injury Setback
Kasper Schmeichel has announced his retirement from football at the age of 39 after failing to recover from a serious shoulder injury.
The veteran goalkeeper, whose contract with Celtic F.C. was nearing its end, had been sidelined since February. Following consultations with surgeons and medical experts, the former Denmark international decided to call time on his career.
“I believe that now is the right time,” the son of Peter Schmeichel told TV2 in Denmark.
The injury dates back to Denmark’s Nations League quarter-final defeat to Portugal in March 2025. Schmeichel damaged his shoulder during the match but continued playing because Denmark had already used all their substitutes.
The problem worsened months later during Celtic’s Europa League defeat against Stuttgart.
Schmeichel admitted he explored every possible route to continue playing, even considering a rehabilitation process that could have lasted up to a year.
“This is a decision that has been made for me,” he said.
“I didn’t realise how bad it was in March. It’s been a long process. When I landed on it in February, I could tell straight away that something was seriously wrong.
“I have consulted with various surgeons and experts regarding my shoulder, and they have told me that I should not expect to return to playing top-flight football.”
Schmeichel leaves the game after earning 120 caps for the Denmark national football team and representing his country at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. He also played a key role in Denmark’s run to the semi-finals of Euro 2020.
At club level, he enjoyed the most successful spell of his career with Leicester City, helping the Foxes win the Premier League title in the 2015-16 season before lifting the FA Cup in 2021.
After leaving Leicester, Schmeichel had spells with OGC Nice and Anderlecht before joining Celtic, where he made 39 appearances this season and collected a second Scottish Premiership winners’ medal during his two years in Glasgow.
Schmeichel, who started his professional journey with Manchester City F.C., admitted he would have preferred a different ending to his career.
“I think everyone dreams of saying goodbye on the field, but you don’t always get what you want,” added Schmeichel.
“I’ve had so much else along the way, so football doesn’t owe me anything. I’ve had so many opportunities, so many experiences.
“What stands out most are the friendships and connections I’ve made. The moments I’ve shared with them – for better or worse.”
