Again, Tinubu Govt Extends Student Loan Application Deadline For 2025/2026 Session
President Bola Tinubu’s government has, through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), approved another extension for its Student Loan Application Portal to enable more students to complete their applications for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The extension, according to the NELFUND, is specifically targeted at tertiary institutions that formally requested additional time to allow their students to participate in the programme.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by NELFUND’s Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi.
According to the statement, the decision was taken after some institutions appealed for more time to allow eligible students to finalise their applications.
“The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has approved an extension of its Student Loan Application Portal for institutions that have formally requested additional time for the 2025/2026 academic session,” the statement read.
The Fund explained that the extension would give students in the affected institutions an additional opportunity to complete their application process through the official portal.
Commenting on the development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr, reiterated the agency’s commitment to ensuring that eligible Nigerian students are able to access the financial support provided under the student loan scheme.
He emphasised that the programme was designed to remove financial obstacles that prevent many students from pursuing higher education.
“NELFUND remains committed to ensuring that eligible students across participating institutions have the opportunity to access the student loan programme,” Sawyerr said.
The Fund also urged students in institutions affected by the extension to make use of the additional window to submit their applications.
NELFUND stressed that all applications must be completed through the official portal to ensure proper processing and verification.
The agency further reiterated its dedication to maintaining transparency and accountability in administering the student loan scheme.
The student loan initiative is part of efforts by the Federal Government to widen access to higher education for students, particularly those from low-income families.
The loan scheme is administered by NELFUND following legislation signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in April 2024.
The programme provides interest-free loans to students in public tertiary institutions across Nigeria to help cover tuition fees and other educational expenses.
Under the framework of the scheme, beneficiaries are expected to begin repayment only after completing their studies and securing employment.
Officials say the initiative is intended to ease financial pressure on students while promoting equitable access to tertiary education across the country.
