Rivers United, Enyimba Named Among World’s Top 500 Clubs In Latest IFFHS Ranking

Two of Nigeria’s most famous club sides, Rivers United and Enyimba, have earned places among the world’s top 500 teams in the latest five-year assessment released by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).

In the IFFHS Men’s Club World Ranking covering January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2025, Rivers United sit 278th globally with 361.75 points, while Enyimba are ranked 421st with 280 points. Notably, they are the only Nigerian representatives in the top 500 list.

The ranking measures performances in domestic leagues, continental competitions and global tournaments over a five-year stretch, offering a broader view of consistency and impact rather than a single standout season.

Rivers United’s inclusion reflects a steady rise both at home and on the continent. The Port Harcourt club clinched the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title in the 2021/22 campaign and followed that triumph with a third-place finish in 2022/23.

On the continental stage, they reached the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup in successive seasons, 2022/23 and 2023/24, and have since qualified for the group phase of the 2025/26 CAF Champions League.

Enyimba, long regarded as one of Nigeria’s most decorated clubs, also strengthened their case within the review period. The nine-time domestic champions secured another league title in 2023 and recorded two third-place finishes across the five years under consideration. They have remained active in CAF competitions, including an appearance in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage in 2024/25.

Despite their global recognition, the Aba-based side are navigating a difficult league campaign this term and find themselves hovering just one point above the relegation zone.

Rivers United, by contrast, currently lead the NPFL table with two matches in hand and have become Nigeria’s most consistent continental performers in recent seasons. In CAF’s five-year club coefficient, Rivers United are ranked 24th, while Enyimba sit 35th. Once again, they are the only Nigerian teams to feature on that list.

At the summit of the global standings, Spanish giants Real Madrid occupy first place, followed by Manchester City and Brazilian giants CR Flamengo. Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich complete the top five.

The recognition for Rivers United and Enyimba arrives at a time when the NPFL has slipped in the IFFHS league rankings. Nigeria’s top flight dropped 15 places to 91st in the world in the 2025 assessment, accumulating 171.75 points.

The league standings, which also factor in continental and global results, highlight the broader challenges confronting Nigerian club football. Yet the presence of two NPFL sides among the world’s top 500 suggests that individual progress is still possible amid structural hurdles.

The IFFHS which was founded in 1984 and headquartered in Zurich compiles its rankings using a points-based system that evaluates clubs’ achievements across domestic, continental and global competitions over a defined period.
