Premier League Results: Chelsea, Aston Villa, Drop Points, Brighton Win

Chelsea and Aston Villa were left ruing missed opportunities on a dramatic afternoon of Premier League action, while Brighton finally rediscovered their cutting edge to claim a much-needed victory on the road.

At Stamford Bridge, 10-man Chelsea were denied at the death as Burnley striker Zian Flemming rose highest in stoppage time to earn a 1-1 draw. The Dutch forward nodded home from a pinpoint James Ward-Prowse corner in the 93rd minute, silencing the home crowd just when it seemed the Blues would hold on.

Chelsea had been in control for long spells and struck early through Joao Pedro, who found the net inside four minutes. However, the game turned in the 72nd minute when Wesley Fofana was shown a red card. Reduced to ten men, the hosts gradually lost their grip, and Burnley capitalised late on.

The result leaves Chelsea fourth on 45 points, missing the chance to strengthen their grip on a Champions League spot, while Burnley remain in the relegation zone but will take heart from a hard-earned point away from home.

Over at Villa Park, Aston Villa also had to settle for a draw as Tammy Abraham marked his return to the club with a late equaliser against Leeds United.

The visitors had looked set for only their second away league win of the season after Anton Stach stunned the home support with a superb 30-yard free-kick in the 31st minute, catching Emiliano Martinez off guard as the ball flew into the top corner.

Villa responded with intensity after the break. Karl Darlow produced an outstanding save to deny Amadou Onana before pushing Emiliano Buendia’s effort onto the post.

The pressure eventually told in the 88th minute when Abraham, back at Villa in an £18.2 million move from Besiktas, flicked the ball into the net with his knee after Ezri Konsa had won the initial knockdown from a corner.

The 1-1 draw keeps Villa third on 51 points, seven behind leaders Arsenal, who face Tottenham in the North London derby on Sunday. Leeds, meanwhile, move eight points clear of the bottom three.

Brighton provided the standout performance of the day, ending a six-match winless run with a deserved victory over Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. Under-pressure manager Fabian Hurzeler saw his side produce a lively first-half display that yielded two goals before the interval.

After Ferdi Kadioglu’s long-range strike crashed against the crossbar, Diego Gomez reacted quickest to slot home the rebound. Brentford’s Nathan Collins then endured a difficult introduction off the bench, misjudging Jack Hinshelwood’s low cross and gifting Danny Welbeck a simple finish from close range.

Brentford threatened sporadically, with Igor Thiago and Vitaly Janelt both off target, but lacked their usual sharpness. It was also a historic afternoon for James Milner, who made his 654th Premier League appearance to break Gareth Barry’s long-standing record.

Brighton’s win lifts them to 12th and 10 points clear of danger, while Brentford remain seventh after missing the opportunity to break into the top six.
