Valentine’s Day 2026: Peter Obi Urges Nigerians To Put Love Into Action
Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to look beyond flowers and sweet messages this Valentine’s Day and instead channel their affection into service, sacrifice and a renewed commitment to the nation.
Valentine’s Day, celebrated each year on 14 February, is traditionally associated with romance, gifts and grand gestures. But Obi believes the spirit of the day should stretch further. In his view, Nigeria itself needs love, expressed not in sentiment but in responsible action.
In a message titled “Nigeria Needs Our Love in Action” shared on his 𝕏 page on Saturday, the former Anambra State governor wrote, “Love is not just emotion; it is sacrifice, discipline, and commitment to what is right, honesty, compassion, respect, and devotion to the common good.”
Obi appealed particularly to young Nigerians, encouraging them to see the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on their role in shaping the country’s future. According to him, patriotism must be more than a slogan. It should be evident in daily choices and civic conduct.
“Like a living being, a country flourishes when nurtured with care and dedication. Loving Nigeria means promoting fair elections, rejecting vices like corruption, greed, division, and mediocrity, and supporting only those with capacity, commitment, and character,” Obi stated.
He argued that real devotion to country involves the courage to speak up when things are not working and the discipline to offer workable solutions. Silence in the face of wrongdoing is not neutrality but neglect, according to the former presidential aspirant.
“It also means pointing out faults and proposing solutions, while promoting human and developmental values, justice, competence, transparency, and investment in education and healthcare. Where corruption destroys opportunity, integrity restores it; where division breeds conflict, unity fosters progress,” he added.
Obi said that if Nigerians could extend the spirit of Valentine’s Day beyond personal relationships into public life, the impact would be transformative. Families would be stronger, communities more cohesive and governance more accountable.
“On this Valentine’s Day, let us embrace love that strengthens families, communities, and our nation. A new Nigeria is possible when love becomes action,” he said.
He concluded his message with a simple greeting: “Happy Valentine’s Day to you all.”
