Tottenham Hotspur Sack Thomas Frank After Chaotic Eight Months

Tottenham Hotspur have parted company with head coach Thomas Frank following a dismal 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle United on Tuesday.

The decision ends the Dane’s tenure after just under eight months in charge. He left Spurs sitting on the 16th spot in the Premier League, only five points clear of the relegation zone, after a string of disappointing results.

The North London club has now gone eight league games without a win, marking their longest winless run since October 2008. In their past 17 league matches, they have claimed just two victories, amassing a mere 12 points.

Frank took over in June, replacing Ange Postecoglou, and signed a contract running until 2028. While he delivered strong performances in Europe, guiding Tottenham to automatic qualification for the Champions League last 16 with a fourth-place finish in their group, he struggled to turn around the club’s domestic form.

In the Premier League this season, Frank’s record stood at seven wins, eight draws, and 11 defeats. Spurs have also been eliminated from both domestic cup competitions, losing to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup fourth round and Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round.

Fan frustration had been mounting for weeks. Tottenham supporters booed the team after losses to Newcastle and West Ham, and Frank himself was jeered with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” during the 2-2 draw at Burnley and a defeat to West Ham. Even a spirited 2-2 comeback against Manchester City at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium did little to ease tensions.

Captain Cristian Romero did not hold back in his criticism of the board following the City game, describing it as “disgraceful” that only 11 senior players were fit for the match. Romero then received a straight red card against Manchester United on 7 February, his second of the season, in a 2-0 defeat.

Despite Premier League struggles, Tottenham were strong in the Champions League, winning five, drawing two, and losing just once in the group stage, that defeat coming against holders Paris Saint-Germain. Domestically, however, results have been poor since November, including a 4-1 loss to Arsenal and a 3-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest.

BBC Sport reports that Frank was already under significant internal scrutiny before Tuesday’s loss, with at least one executive raising the possibility of ending his reign.

Home form was particularly weak under Frank, with Spurs claiming just 10 points at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, though their away record was stronger, collecting 19 points from 13 matches on the road.

Before joining Tottenham, Frank enjoyed a seven-year spell with Brentford, guiding them from the Championship to the Premier League in 2021. His Spurs tenure began with a UEFA Super Cup defeat on penalties to PSG, following the club’s Europa League triumph under Postecoglou.

The season started promisingly, with wins over Burnley, Manchester City, and West Ham in the first four league games, alongside a Champions League victory against Villarreal. However, injuries to key players, including Lucas Bergvall, Ben Davies, Richarlison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, and James Maddison, hampered the team’s progress.

Tottenham also face a further blow with captain Romero suspended for the next three Premier League games, including the north London derby against Arsenal on 22 February.
