Werder Bremen Director, Clemens Fritz Downplays Job Concerns As Victor Boniface Loan Backfires

Werder Bremen managing director, Clemens Fritz has dismissed growing speculation over his future at the club, insisting he still enjoys the full support of the supervisory board despite criticism linked to the signing of Victor Boniface.

Fritz has come under pressure following Werder Bremen’s decision to sign Boniface on loan after a difficult transfer window.

The Nigerian forward had previously been close to joining AC Milan, but the move collapsed after he failed a medical, even though Bayer Leverkusen had reportedly agreed to the deal.

Hoping to help the 25-year-old revive his form, Werder Bremen brought him to the Weserstadion on a short-term deal until the end of the season. The move, however, failed to deliver the expected impact.

Boniface struggled to find consistency, recording only two assists in 11 Bundesliga appearances before sustaining a knee injury that is set to sideline him for the rest of the campaign.

The setback, combined with concerns over the striker’s injury record, intensified scrutiny of Fritz’s recruitment decisions. This led to a meeting with the club’s supervisory board to review recent transfer activity, including the Boniface deal.

Following the discussions, Fritz expressed confidence in his standing at the club, saying the board understood the context of the signing.

“I feel supported. I explained the situation to the supervisory board openly and transparently and was met with understanding,” he told Bild as quoted by Fussballtransfers.
