Aston Villa’s Unai Emery Plays Down Touchline Tension With Tielemans
Unai Emery brushed aside a brief flash of tension on the touchline after Aston Villa booked their place in the Europa League last 16 with a narrow win away at Fenerbahce.
The Villa boss appeared to clash with midfielder Youri Tielemans late on in Istanbul, moments after withdrawing him in stoppage time.
With Villa protecting a 1-0 lead in the 92nd minute, Tielemans jogged towards the dugout and offered a handshake. Emery reacted animatedly, pushing the player in the chest as the clock ticked down.
Any suggestion of lingering ill feeling was quickly dismissed by Emery, who played down the incident with a smile while speaking to TNT Sports. “He’s my son,” the Spaniard said, signalling that emotions had simply boiled over in the heat of a tense finish.
The victory ensured Villa’s progress with a game to spare, their night capped by a decisive strike from Jadon Sancho, his first goal for the club since arriving earlier in the season.
The result kept Villa firmly on course in a competition Emery knows better than most.
Not everyone was entirely convinced by the touchline exchange. Former Villa defender Joleon Lescott questioned the optics of the moment during TNT Sports’ coverage.
“It might be innocent, but I don’t like that,” Lescott said. “Regardless of what it was for, if it was the other way around and the player refused to shake his manager’s hand, there would be uproar, and his mentality and professionalism would be questioned.
“I’m sure it’s more innocent than it looks, but I don’t like the look of it.”
The night also carried personal significance for Emery. It marked his 100th match in the Europa League, a tournament he has already won four times as a manager. Asked about the milestone, he admitted he still has lofty ambitions.
“I am dreaming,” Emery said, hinting that a fifth Europa League crown remains firmly in his sights.
