Massive Protest Hits Ondo College Of Health Technology
Students of the Ondo State College of Health Technology, Akure, on Monday staged a protest over alleged extortion and deteriorating infrastructure at the institution, grounding academic activities.
The protesters barricaded the main gate of the college, blocked access to the campus and set tyres ablaze while chanting solidarity songs to express their grievances.
They declared that lectures and examinations would remain suspended until the school management addressed what they described as years of neglect.
Armed with placards bearing various inscriptions, the students accused the authorities of failing to provide basic facilities needed for effective learning.
They pointed to dilapidated classrooms, hostels and laboratories, saying the poor state of infrastructure had made academic work difficult.
The protesters also lamented the absence of a steady water supply on campus, which they said had worsened both living and learning conditions for students.
Some of the students alleged that the school management continued to collect what they described as arbitrary and excessive fees despite the poor condition of facilities.
According to them, repeated complaints and appeals to the authorities yielded no positive response, forcing them to take to the streets.
“We have complained severally, but nothing has changed. That is why we decided to protest,” one of the students said.
As of the time of filing this report, the management of the Ondo State College of Health Technology had not issued an official response to the allegations raised by the students.
