Kano To Probe Case Of Woman Who Died After Doctor Allegedly Forgot Scissors Inside Her
The Kano State health authorities have launched an investigation after a Nigerian woman, Aishatu Umar, died from complications linked to a pair of scissors that were allegedly left inside her abdomen during a surgical procedure at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano State.
Umar, a mother of five, reportedly passed away on Sunday while undergoing corrective surgery to remove the scissors, which were said to have been forgotten inside her body during an earlier operation at the facility.
A relative of the deceased, Abubakar Mohammed, in an interview with Daily Trust, disclosed that Umar had suffered from severe abdominal pain for months following a surgery carried out at the hospital in September 2025.
Despite her repeated visits to the hospital, where she complained of worsening pain, her condition was reportedly ignored, and she was only given pain-relief medication.
Mohammed explained, “She underwent surgery at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in September. After that, she complained of severe abdominal pain for months.
“Each time she returned to the hospital, she was given painkillers. It was only two days ago that scans were carried out, and that was when doctors discovered that scissors had been forgotten inside her body.”
According to Mohammed, plans were immediately made for another surgery to remove the scissor, but Umar tragically passed away before the procedure could take place.
Reacting to the incident, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board has promised a thorough investigation into the alleged negligence that led to Umar’s death. The board’s executive secretary, Mansur Nagoda, directed that an immediate probe be conducted after public outcry over the incident.
Hospital Management Responds
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the board’s spokesperson, Samira Suleiman, acknowledged the distressing nature of the reports surrounding Umar’s death and the complaints made by her family. The board confirmed that the investigation would cover all medical and administrative procedures related to the case.
The statement reads, “The executive secretary has directed that an immediate and thorough investigation be carried out to establish the facts of what transpired at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre.
“The investigation will be transparent, impartial, and professional. Appropriate actions will be taken in line with established regulations should any negligence be established.”
The Kano State Hospitals Management Board also expressed condolences to Umar’s family, assuring the public that the matter would be handled with the utmost seriousness. They reaffirmed that patient safety remains a top priority.
