Michael Carrick Front-Runner For Manchester United Caretaker Role

Michael Carrick has emerged as the leading candidate to take charge of Manchester United on a caretaker basis, with sources close to the process indicating that discussions have advanced in recent days.

The Old Trafford hierarchy is eager to have an appointment confirmed before players report back for training on Wednesday. While a final call has yet to be made, there is growing confidence inside the club that the 44-year-old is well placed to step in.

Carrick is no stranger to the role. He briefly took charge of United in 2021 following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, overseeing three matches. During that spell, United won twice and drew once before Carrick stepped aside after the arrival of Ralf Rangnick as interim boss.

Solskjaer himself is understood to have held face-to-face talks with United officials on Saturday about a possible return, adding another layer to the ongoing deliberations.

United are searching for stability after parting company with Ruben Amorim earlier this month. The Portuguese coach was dismissed on 5 January, just 14 months into his tenure.

In the immediate aftermath of Amorim’s exit, former United and Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher was handed temporary responsibility for first-team matters.

However, his short stint appears to be nearing its end following Sunday’s FA Cup third-round defeat to Brighton. Fletcher had previously guided the side to a draw away at Burnley in the Premier League.

Carrick’s association with United runs deep. He made 464 appearances for the club between 2006 and 2018 after joining from Tottenham under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson. Renowned for his calm authority in midfield, he went on to transition seamlessly into coaching at Old Trafford.

After retiring from playing, Carrick joined Jose Mourinho’s backroom staff at the end of the 2017-2018 season. Even after Mourinho’s departure, he remained a key member of the coaching setup throughout Solskjaer’s 168-game spell in charge.

Away from United, Carrick’s sole permanent managerial role came at Middlesbrough. Appointed in October 2022, he spent two and a half years at the Riverside Stadium and led the club to the Championship play-offs in the 2022-2023 season, only to fall short against Coventry City in the semi-finals.

Middlesbrough later missed out on the top six in successive campaigns, a run that ultimately cost Carrick his job last June.
