AFCON 2025: Akor Adams Dedicates First AFCON Goal To Hospitalised Mother
Super Eagles forward, Akor Adams, has revealed that his mother was hospitalised just hours before Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 victory over Mozambique in the second round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Monday.
Adams, who featured prominently in the match, scored Nigeria’s fourth goal with a stunning strike in the 75th minute, marking his first-ever goal in the continental tournament.
Speaking after the game, Adams dedicated the goal to his mother and expressed relief over her improving health condition.
“The goal is dedicated to my mum. She is supposed to be here, but she is in a hospital. She was admitted this morning, but she is much better now,” he told reporters.
Adams’ goal was also his third in total for the Nigerian senior national team.
The Montpellier striker praised the performance of his teammates, highlighting the contributions of fellow forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
“I am happy for the team. Victor had a fantastic game, and Lookman had a fantastic game. We came out with a victory, and we are happy,” he said.
In a related development, six countries have now booked their places in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following the end of Monday night’s Round of 16 fixtures.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria joined the list of qualified teams after a dominant 4-0 win over Mozambique in Fez. Goals from Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams, along with a brace from Victor Osimhen, ensured a comfortable passage for the Super Eagles, who remain the only side to have won all four of their matches at the tournament so far.
Egypt also confirmed their place in the last eight after seeing off Benin Republic 3-1 in the other Round of 16 tie decided on Monday.
