Multi-Million Naira Property Wrecked In Fresh Petrol Tanker Fire In Gombe
Tension gripped residents of the Tumfure area of Gombe metropolis on Friday, December 26, after a fuel tanker caught fire while offloading diesel at the Rain Oil Filling Station.
Naija News reports that the incident, which occurred in the early hours of the day, was swiftly brought under control by operatives of the Federal Fire Service, Gombe State Command, preventing what officials described as a potential large-scale disaster.
Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Fire Service in the state, ASF MB Muazu, said firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene after a distress call was received.
According to him, the quick intervention and professionalism of the officers ensured that the fire did not completely engulf the tanker or spread to surrounding facilities.
“Upon receiving the distress call, our officers were immediately mobilised to the scene. Through timely and professional intervention, the fire was successfully contained, averting a potentially catastrophic situation,” Muazu said.
Muazu explained that the location of the incident made the situation particularly dangerous, noting that the filling station is situated within a highly sensitive commercial zone.
He said the area is close to other filling stations, busy commercial centres and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited depot in Tumfure.
“The affected area is a highly sensitive commercial environment. Our swift response prevented a possible chain reaction that could have affected nearby facilities and properties estimated at over ₦500 million,” he added.
No Casualties Recorded
The Federal Fire Service spokesperson confirmed that no life was lost in the incident, describing the outcome as a reflection of the Service’s preparedness and commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
He further cautioned operators of filling stations and petroleum facilities to strictly adhere to safety regulations, especially during the discharge of petroleum products.
“We urge operators of filling stations and petroleum facilities to always adhere strictly to safety standards to prevent avoidable incidents of this nature,” Muazu warned.
Muazu also commended the Nigeria Police Force, Tumfure Division, and the Department of State Services for providing security cover and support during the operation.
“The cooperation and security cover provided by officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the DSS greatly assisted our personnel in effectively carrying out their duties,” he said.
Residents of the area were later seen going about their normal activities after the fire was fully extinguished and the situation brought under control.
