Evra, Parker Question Bruno Fernandes’ Discipline At Manchester United

Portuguese attacking midfielder, Bruno Fernandes may be scoring and creating goals, but two former Manchester United defenders believe his influence is not as straightforward as it looks on paper.

Patrice Evra was the first to raise concerns after Fernandes netted twice in United’s 4-1 win over Wolves on Monday. Speaking to Stake, Evra said the midfielder’s eye-catching numbers often hide what he feels is a lack of control and discipline during matches.

“It’s always sensitive to talk about Bruno. Bruno is giving assists and scoring goals, this has never been the issue,” Evra said. “The issue for me is for him to control the team and the tempo when he gets the ball. You couldn’t tell me where he’s playing because he’s everywhere. And at the end, you’re not even in the right position. But United wouldn’t be where they are in the table if Bruno wasn’t playing.”

Evra’s comments reflect a broader debate about Fernandes’ leadership. The United captain has been criticised for showing his frustration too often and for losing focus when the team is under pressure.

Paul Parker, speaking to Goal, went even further. The former England centre-back compared Fernandes’ movement to that of a restless toddler, arguing that his tendency to roam leaves Casemiro exposed in midfield.

“Casemiro does a great job,” Parker said. “At Man United, he is playing next to someone who doesn’t stand still. He [Fernandes] is like my one-year-old, you leave them somewhere, but they are not going to stay there, you put your head down, and he’s gone.

“When he’s gone, he doesn’t leave you a note behind about where he’s going to be. That’s the thing with Bruno, he is going to score a goal or do an assist, and the rest is all forgotten.”

Parker believes that while Fernandes’ output is important, his constant movement makes it difficult for United to keep their shape and protect their midfield.
