Liverpool Stun Inter, Atalanta Humble Chelsea In Tuesday’s Champions League Night [Full Results]

Liverpool breathed life back into their Champions League campaign with a tense 1-0 win over Inter Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday.

Dominik Szoboszlai settled the match from the spot in the closing minutes, drilling his penalty beyond Yann Sommer after referee Felix Zwayer judged Alessandro Bastoni to have tugged Florian Wirtz’s shirt. Inter’s players surrounded the official in protest, yet the decision stood and Liverpool escaped Italy with a priceless win.

Mohamed Salah did not travel with the squad after criticising coach Arne Slot over the weekend, claiming he had been “thrown under the bus” following a third straight match spent on the bench.

Slot admitted on Monday he had “no clue” if the Egyptian forward had played his last game for the club. Saudi officials added fuel to the speculation by saying they would do “whatever it can” to land the 33-year-old in January.

Tuesday’s contest was hardly a classic. The biggest moment before the late penalty came when Ibrahima Konate’s header was ruled out after a lengthy VAR check determined Hugo Ekitike had handled in the build-up.

Inter rarely threatened a Liverpool side missing Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo in addition to their unsettled talisman. Lautaro Martínez squandered the hosts’ best opening when he headed straight at Alisson.

The result moves Liverpool to 12 points from six matches, keeping them inside the top eight places that offer a direct route into the last 16. Inter sit fifth on the same tally, though they have now lost two European fixtures in a row and face a brutal finish with Arsenal at home before a trip to Borussia Dortmund.

Chelsea’s night in Europe was far less joyful. The Blues slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Atalanta as Charles De Ketelaere delivered a superb display in Bergamo. Joao Pedro struck his first Champions League goal to put Chelsea in front, but Gianluca Scamacca levelled after the break and De Ketelaere completed the comeback with a decisive strike seven minutes from time.

Chelsea have not won since beating Barcelona 3-0 on 25 November and remain on 10 points after six matches, leaving Enzo Maresca’s side in danger of missing out on a guaranteed place in the last 16. Their final two ties are against Pafos at Stamford Bridge and Napoli away.

Atalanta’s win strengthens their push for qualification, with victories over Club Brugge, Marseille, Eintracht Frankfurt and now Chelsea marking an impressive campaign so far.
