NPFL Matchweek 16 Fixtures: Title Race Heats Up As Abia Warriors Host Rivers United
The race for the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) crown enters a decisive phase this weekend as Matchweek 16 serves up heavyweight clashes, fierce relegation battles and a packed programme across multiple venues.
All eyes turn to Umuahia on Sunday afternoon, where Abia Warriors welcome Rivers United in what promises to be the standout NPFL fixture of the round.
The hosts are desperate for a spark after collecting only two points from their last four matches, while Rivers United arrive with one of the league’s strongest records and unbeaten away form after 13 outings.
Abia Warriors sit sixth with 23 points, but their last win came on 2 November in Minna. Rivers United, widely admired for their balance and consistency in the domestic campaign, have dropped just one league game all season.
Their form at home and on the road tells a different story from their struggles in the CAF Champions League, and many fans are eager to see whether the Pride of Rivers will stretch their impressive run or finally be stopped in Umuahia.
Elsewhere, attention will also fall on Abeokuta as champions Remo Stars look to end a damaging slump when they host Enyimba at the MKO Abiola Stadium.
Remo have lost back-to-back matches, piling pressure on Daniel Ogunmodede and his players to respond. Enyimba managed to halt a rough spell of their own with a 2-1 win over Rangers, but their recent record against Remo Stars has been poor. Interim coach Lawrence Ukaegbu continues to steady the team before the arrival of Ayodeji Ayeni.
Fans in the north will be watching a tense relegation scrap in Maiduguri, where El Kanemi Warriors take on Barau. The Borno club sit 15th on the table with 18 points, while Barau are 18th on 16 points and cannot afford another setback with a postponed fixture against Rivers United still on the horizon.
In Ilorin, Kwara United hope home support will help them recover from a narrow 3-2 loss to Barau last week. Niger Tornadoes will arrive with confidence after defeating Remo Stars in their last outing.
Rangers, who woke up too late in Aba last weekend, face Bayelsa United in Enugu. The Prosperity Boys slipped at home against Katsina United and will be eager to recover lost points, though Rangers will be equally keen to push back towards the top places.
The league leaders Ikorodu City head to Bauchi to face Wikki Tourists. The hosts are aiming to bounce back from a heavy 4-0 defeat to Bendel Insurance and will need a strong response to calm their frustrated supporters. Ikorodu City have impressed away from home, showing discipline and composure in tight matches.
Monday night closes Matchweek 16 with two fixtures. Katsina United host Bendel Insurance in Ilorin, and second-placed Nasarawa United welcome Shooting Stars in Lafia. A win for the Solid Miners could return them to the summit, depending on Ikorodu City’s result.
